Dear All,

This is a TOTALLY unrelated topic, but it happens I am volunteering at the Olympics (volunteering means nothing is covered including accommodation). As some of you know, I live in Madrid, and I will have to be working in the ExCel London from July 25 to August 5... If any of you, lives around / knows someone who lives around / would be willing to host 2 volunteers / could offer very budget accommodation or... please contact me... The plus, you will be able to share the Olympics from a different perspective, while perhaps sharing art in the free days... And you will always have a place in Madrid!

In Paris over the weekend, I went to the Musee D'Orsay to see the "Degas and the Nude" exhibition which is on until 1 July. Apparently, it is the first since the 1988 retrospective at the Grand Palais.

Besides the well known series of paintings of women in brothels and bathing, the exhibition also contains a series entitled The Body in Peril: Scene of War in the Middle Ages and many of his other drawings and paintings.

There are also a number of Degas sculptures, some cast in bronze and others just the original wax models.

At 12 euros, which also covers the entrance to the rest of this extensive gallery, this is a must see delight, and for anyone under the age of 26 entry is entirely free.

Has this happened to anyone else?

A couple of weeks ago I went to "drop-in" session at a venue here in Frome where I had been booked as model for a 2 1/2 hour session. The only people to turn up were the organiser, who was not going to be drawing, and myself. No artists bothered to brave the rain. After hanging about waiting for over an hour, the organiser paid me the full amount agreed for the session and sent me home.

I did worry about whether it was me that the artists were avoiding, but the organiser told me that she did not advertise the model who had been booked for any particular day. This set my mind at rest on that, but a complete lack of artists does not look good for the survival of the group.

Yesterday I did a 6 hour portrait pose for two female artists in the corner of a small but busy college studio.

For two of those hours the studio also played host to a cramped life drawing session featuring another mature male model. Space was tight and again all participants were female.

For one of the longer poses the other model was seated with his back to me in what seemed a rather revealing pose from my rear perspective. One of the girls painting me had her seat positioned directly back-to-back with that of the other model - necessitated by lack of space.

I'm sure she didn't realise it at all but from time to time she leant back fully in her chair to appraise her work at a distance but in doing so her long hair touched and brushed against the back and shoulder of the model behind her as he sat in pose.

I could not see whether this had any physiological consequences on him from my position but he did seem discomfited at times when this happened. There was no obvious reaction in the room but if this had happened to me I may have found it difficult to deal with.

I've worked on and off for years at modeling. Earlier on I did it for money (I was a college student) but I as time went on I really began to enjoy it for a bazillion reasons.

In my early days I wasn't all that concerned with the art, they were all students and I didn't think they were very good and I didn't know much about art (LOL my brother IS an artist and my dad was one).

This time around I'm working with some really talented artists who are doing amazing work. I feel so lucky that many of them have offered to take pix of their work and email them to me. It's great to have them. I have not printed them or used them on my website or anything, just looked at them on my ipad.

For the past 6 weeks I've been working with a woman artist who's work I LOVE so much. I wish I could own one of the pieces but she sells them in galleries for thousands of dollars. Out of my league. I asked her last week if she photographed them if she would be willing to share the photo's with me. She said sure. She sent them to me but they are very small file sizes. Great for me to look at on my ipad but I couldn't have them printed out to hang.

Again I can't afford any of these pieces and she isn't making any prints of them, is it really rude, wrong to ask her if I can have a larger size of one of them? I would like to print it and hang it but my gut is telling me its not even right to ask her. I know its her art, her talent, and I don't want her to feel like I'm... ripping her off (I'd never print one with out asking).

So is it totally rude to ask if I can print one? I'm happy to look at them on my ipad but I'd love to have one hanging in my bedroom. I've never crossed this bridge before...... I've liked the work that has been done of me but never LOVED it like I do these pieces.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm off in a few minutes to a modeling gig so I'll make this quick.

I live in a sort of spread out area (Cape Cod) and I travel all over the Cape for jobs and on the South Shore too. Maybe my circle so far is about 45 - 50 miles. No public transit here so I have to drive myself. All of this is OK but I'm curious how far everyone else is willing to travel?

Around here the fees are usually between $20. - $30. dollars per hour, so for 3 hours a good job will pay $90. (and there are NOT that many good jobs) but if I have to travel too far that takes a bit bite out of my hard earned dollars.

I use to live/work in Boston where I could take the subway everywhere, not worry about gas or parking. I still have a lot of contacts there and am often asked to model there but to take the train up and back would be about $18. Private artists are happy to pay transportation or gas expense but local classes or art associations are always running on a shoe string and won't pay any extras.

So how far do you all travel? How much travel costs are you willing to pay before it is just too much?

The RAM advert doesn't say, but I understand the organiser is seeking several male and several female models for an all-day (about 5 hours) life modelling session in a tableau vivant style, possibly in June

You must be a RAM approved model to contact this employer. If you are not a member, you can Join RAM Here.

Basically, for the past six months I have been trying to get into life modelling, to at least give it a chance, since it sounds like a fun experience. However, in this time I have not had one single opportunity. I have contacted the local art schools, responded to listings, contacted some artists directly and even broadened the distances I was willing to travel considerably.

Still nothing. Is this a normal time to go without work or is there something about me and my look that turns employers away? Sure, I'm a big guy but from what I have seen that doesn't seem to make it impossible to get work.

Should I just keep trying or is there something that I could do to increase my chances? At this point I am considering just quitting altogether since I haven't even received a courtesy "thank you for contacting me" email. :P
