Sadly this is the second time this week that I have read this type of complaint.
OK some artists will have disappeared due to the "credit crunch" (surely one of the most boring phrases in the language at the moment !). £12 an hour, 3 hour or 5 hour sessions gets expensive.
However, the real problem is the number of new models modelling for minimum wage or even for free (wanting experience or falling for the TFP TFCD offer from photographers). Did this happen in the last recession ? Some artists are not very loyal and so will go for the new and/or cheap model.
I'm not sure if there is an answer but all I can suggest is getting in touch with your most loyal artists to see if they have work. And if you do get a regular artist, work closely with him or her so that your modelling becomes essential to the creative process. One of my best models will offer constructive criticism on my work and, as a result, I think I'm improving; no new model will ever replace this lady in my studio.
